Neck Pain Rehabilitation in Bristol
Neck pain can be frustrating, particularly when it keeps returning despite stretching, resting or trying different exercises.
My approach is based around progressive exercise and strengthening rather than simply avoiding movement.
Depending on your individual situation, your programme may include work on:
Neck strength and control
Upper-back strength
Shoulder and scapular control
Posture and movement
Core and trunk strength
Gradually increasing tolerance to exercise
Returning safely to normal training and everyday activities
There isn’t one exercise that fixes everybody’s neck.
That’s why the starting point is understanding your symptoms, history and current ability, then gradually progressing from there.
Who Is This Neck Pain Support For?
I work with people who may be experiencing problems such as:
Recurring neck pain or stiffness
Pain that settles down but repeatedly comes back.
Neck and shoulder tension
Especially where the neck, shoulders and upper back all feel involved.
Weakness after a period of pain
You may no longer be in severe pain but don’t trust your neck when exercising, lifting or working.
Desk and driving-related neck discomfort
Long periods sitting, driving or working at a computer can aggravate symptoms for some people.
Returning to exercise after neck problems
If you’ve stopped training because you’re worried about aggravating your neck, we can gradually rebuild your confidence and capacity.
Long-term neck problems
If you’ve already been medically assessed and need help rebuilding strength and returning to activity, exercise-based rehabilitation may be appropriate.
My Approach to Neck Pain Is Different
I didn’t become interested in neck and upper-body rehabilitation because I read about it in a textbook.
I experienced long-term upper-body problems myself.
After years working as a carpenter, pain eventually affected my ability to work and train normally.
That experience was one of the reasons I retrained as a personal trainer and developed a strong interest in rehabilitation-focused strength training.
I understand how frustrating it is when pain starts dictating what you can do.
That’s why my approach isn’t about smashing you through a generic workout.
It’s about finding an appropriate starting point and progressively rebuilding strength, movement and confidence.
What Happens When You Contact Me?
You don’t need to commit to a programme just to ask me a question.
1. Tell me what’s happening
Send me a message explaining your neck problem and how it’s affecting you.
2. I’ll tell you whether I think I can help
If your situation sounds appropriate for exercise-based support, I’ll explain what I’d recommend.
If I think you need medical or physiotherapy assessment first, I’ll tell you that instead.
3. We build from your current level
If we work together, your exercises are progressed according to your ability rather than forcing you into a generic programme.
4. The goal is independence
Ultimately, I want you to understand what you’re doing and become stronger and more confident managing your own training.
You can start simply by sending me a message.
No obligation — tell me what’s going on and I’ll let you know whether I think I can help.
Neck Strengthening and Rehabilitation
One reason I focus heavily on strength is that neck rehabilitation doesn’t necessarily mean endlessly stretching the painful area.
The neck works alongside the shoulders, shoulder blades, upper back and trunk.
Your programme may therefore involve considerably more than neck exercises alone.
Depending on your needs, we may work on:
Controlled neck strengthening
Upper-back strengthening
Shoulder stability
Scapular control
Posture awareness
Core stability
Breathing and ribcage positioning
Gradual exposure to movements you’ve been avoiding
The exercises and difficulty should be appropriate to the individual.
The objective isn’t to force your body into a supposedly “perfect” posture.
It’s to build a body that’s stronger and more capable of handling the things you want it to do.
What If I Have Tingling, Numbness or Arm Pain?
Neck problems can sometimes occur alongside pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in the arm or hand.
These symptoms can have different causes and exercise isn’t a substitute for appropriate medical assessment.
If you’re experiencing new or worsening neurological symptoms, significant weakness, problems with balance or coordination, or symptoms following significant trauma, seek appropriate medical assessment.
If you’ve already been assessed and are looking for help rebuilding strength and confidence through exercise, get in touch and tell me about your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can exercise help with neck pain?
Exercise can form part of the management of many types of neck pain. The appropriate exercises depend on your symptoms, history and current ability, which is why I prefer a progressive approach rather than giving everybody the same routine.
Is this physiotherapy?
No. Preservation Fitness provides personal training and exercise-based rehabilitation, not physiotherapy or medical diagnosis.
If your symptoms require clinical investigation or diagnosis, I’ll recommend getting appropriate medical or physiotherapy advice first.
Can you help with cervical stenosis?
I have personal experience of cervical stenosis and understand the difficulties it can cause.
However, cervical stenosis varies considerably between individuals. If you’ve been diagnosed and want help with appropriate exercise, strength and returning to activity, contact me and explain your situation.
What if I’ve already tried physiotherapy?
Some clients contact me after having physiotherapy or another form of treatment because they want ongoing help rebuilding strength and returning to normal exercise.
If you’ve already been assessed, let me know what you’ve been told and what you’re currently able to do.
Do you only work with people from Stockwood?
No. I’m based in Stockwood BS14, but work with people from Stockwood, Whitchurch, Hengrove, Knowle, Brislington, Keynsham and elsewhere around Bristol.
How do I know whether you can help me?
Ask me.
Send me a message describing what’s happening, how long you’ve had the problem and what you’ve already tried.
I’ll tell you whether I think my approach is appropriate.
